KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Community Based Tourism Fair 2023 is set to return for its fifth edition next month at the Suria Sabah Shopping Mall, aiming to bolster rural tourism and promote diverse cultural experiences.

Organised collaboratively by the Sabah Tourism Board and the Federation of Rural Tourism Association Sabah (FeRTAS), this three-day event will see enthusiastic participation from representatives from all 27 districts.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor is expected to launch the fair, scheduled to run from Nov 17-19, emphasizing the state’s commitment to fostering sustainable rural community tourism.

Sabah Tourism Board Chairman Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, who chaired the main organising committee meeting on Monday, also highlighted the significance of robust support from various quarters

“We call upon all relevant ministries and governmental agencies to wholeheartedly support this community-driven initiative.

“Their involvement will not only uplift the fair but also spotlight the unique products and offerings within their purview,” he said.

Preceding the main event, a crucial business-to-business session will transpire on Nov 16, facilitating invaluable interactions between FeRTAS and tour agents.

“This session will enable tour agents to gain a comprehensive understanding of the diverse activities offered by each rural community tourism operator.

“It’s an opportunity for operators to learn from tour agents how to thoughtfully package and effectively market their distinctive experiences,” Joniston added.

Since its inception in 2017, the Sabah Community Based Tourism Fair has evolved significantly, having been previously hosted at Imago Shopping Mall (2017), Suria Sabah (2018 and 2019), and Sabah International Convention Centre (2022), showcasing a steadfast dedication to the growth of community-based tourism in the state.
