KOTA KINABALU: The recent official recognition of Sabah Day marks a significant step by the GRS government in acknowledging Sabah’s history and rights.

Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (STAR) Information Chief Jalumin Bayogoh expressed deep gratitude to the GRS government for this endorsement.

He said this is because Sabah Day has long been a historical event that has been hidden and forgotten.

“This is a meaningful development and part of GRS’s continuous effort in fighting for the rightful rights of Sabah,” said Jalumin.

He extended heartfelt thanks to STAR president Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Jeffrey Kitingan whose longstanding struggle has now come to fruition.

“The recognition of Sabah Day has been a hard-fought battle, as it represents a historical event for Sabah that has been concealed for years. Jeffrey’s commitment to this cause is commendable. He may not want to take the credit, but he has been the face of Sabah Day for years,” he added.

However, Jalumin said the endorsement and recognition must lead to better things, chiefly the gazettement of Sabah Day.

He said it is essential that this must be done properly, similar to what the Sarawak government did with Sarawak Day, and not merely by executive order.

“We don’t want a future rogue government to cancel it out of spite or ignorance. Sabah Day should be supported by all layers of the Sabah community,” he said.

Regrettably, Jalumin said there are some individuals, particularly those in the opposition, who have voiced dissatisfaction with this decision.

“It is strange that certain people, particularly the opposition, are unhappy about this and have sought to diminish this historical event by claiming that Sabah is not yet independent.

“To these detractors, I can say nothing positive about them, but I wish them and their mental health well,” he said.
